The Gonnies Birthday Party!

The Decorations
To have a Gonnies themed party it is all about the decorations!  Now if you are good planner you would stock up on Halloween decorations and supplies in October...But I didn't.  So I had to be a bit more creative.  I posted a wanted ad on my local kijiji looking to buy skulls and Halloween decorations.  I was very lucky that a very generous person see my ad and offered to lend me all her decorations!  She offered full size skeletons, spooky wall decorations, and so much more!  The kids were so surprised with how it all looked!
I also made Goonies themed flags!  some flags said Hey You Guys!, Never say Die, Copper Bones, and pirate flags!  I also found some Goonies articles on the web to stick on the wall!  If you are having a Goonies themed party feel free to email me and I can send you what I found.

The Cake
My best friend offered to make the cake.  She did an amazing job!  A treasure chest cake made to look like One eyed Willies chest in the movie!  She baked two long cakes (9x13), cut them in half.  3 cakes layered on the bottom.  The last piece used for the lid.  To help the lid stay stable use long wooden skewers.  She decorated with long fruit leathers, currents, and licorice.  And then the funnest part was the inside treasure!
We sung happy birthday, blew out the candles...then we took the cake back to the kitchen to be cut...We did this to help not having to much chaos of kids yelling what they want for treasure.  While the cake was being cut we did presents.  This worked so well!
The Games
My daughter and I created a game we called The Amazing Goonie race!  A treasure hunt game!  We tried to time the game to end at the end of the party.  So the kids could retrieve their loot to go home with.

The Amazing Goonie Race!
Mikey and Brandon Walsh are brothers whose family is preparing to move because developers want to build a golf course in the place of their neighborhood.  But when Mikey stumbles upon a treasure map of the famed "One-Eyed" Willie's hidden fortune, Mikey, Brandon, and their friends Chunk, Mouth, Andy, Stef, and Data, calling themselves The Goonies, set out on a quest to find the treasure in hopes of saving their neighborhood.
The treasure is in a cavern, but the entrance to the cavern is under the house of evil thieves, the Fratelli’s!

So brace yourself for a treacherous journey - you're going with these gutsy Goonie Kids on a treasure hunt for One Eyed Willie's rich stuff! But beware, there are lots of booby traps, temptations, and challenges along the perilous path to the Pirate Ship Cavern. And don't forget, you're being pursued by the nefarious Fratelli Gang.

Ye Intruders Beware
Crushing Death and Grief
Soaked in Blood
Of the trespassing Thief

Your adventure begins
Where coals glow bright,
Ye must tunnel down low.
Where there is no light.
(So they would have to guess that they would have to go to the fireplace...and we had a tunnel set up for them to crawl through.  After everyone crawled through my daughter would read the next clue)
Continue to the next station
Where you will see a game
Set out for thee
Figure it out
And you’ll get clue number 3!
(we had a pipes game set out for them to play...connect the pipes all together.  When finished they would come across My Chester Pot(skeleton) the next clue was in his wallet)
Chester Copperpot
Don’t you guys see?
Don’t you realize!
He was a pro!
He never made it this far!
Look how far we’ve come.
We got a chance!
Goonies never say die!
It’s our time!

Your challenge is this,
The Frattelli’s are not far behind.
You need to set a booby trap
With whatever you can find.
(We had lots of stuff for them to create a booby trap with!)
You have a head start,
But the Fratteli’s are still close behind!
Hurry to the foot bridge,
And walk across without falling,
To make better time.
(My husband made a short foot bridge...after everyone crossed my daughter read the next clue)
To move on
Play the tune
If each note is said
If you make too many mistakes
Ye will surely be dead.

Play the bones to get out of here,
If you get the wrong note you will all B-Flat.
(they had to figure out to go to the piano, and play the music set out for them)
Find the Pirate Ship
Upon the mirrored sea,
And the next clue,
 will be waiting for thee!
(the clue was under the pirate ship I set out on a mirror)
You don’t have much far to go!
Seek the cannon ball chamber,
Though the trap door,
To find one eyed Willie
(we made a trap door with an open box for the kids to crawl through...black balloons set out to be cannonballs!)
Say hi to Willie
You’ve found his treasure
Take care not to take his treasure
You must save it for Willie.
(I had a smaller Willie with treasure chest beside the big treasure chest filled with Rich stuff!  The kids got to pick out their own loot!)
The treasure hunt was such a success!  The kids were really getting into it... pretended that the Fratelli's were close behind!  Most recently saw the movie so they understood the adventure!

We also had pirate crafts to make hats, eye patches, and daggers.  We play pin the "X" on the map.  And a fun pirate pitch game where we threw cannonballs(water balloons) at a target!

Costumes!
My daughter dressed like Cyndi Lauper.
My son was Mickey.
My friend's son was Chunk
It wasn't a costume party but it was fun to dress up!

The Invitations!
These were fun to make, I found the graphic online and modified it a bit.  I think they turned out great!  I can email the invitations template if interested.

The end
We kept the party short, 2 hours only.  The kids had such a great time.  Hope these ideas help you with your own Goonies party!  To learn more about what the The Goonies are all about see my post!
I made these awesome flags to decorate cupcakes we had later after the party for family and friends!

Time Travel

Time travel has always amazed me!  I know amazed???  I just love the movies, the books, tv shows about adventures in time travel.

Here are a "few" of my fave tv and films about time travel!

The Time Machine (1895) written by H.G. Wells. This 32,000 word story is one of my favorite time travel adventures!  Made into 3 movies!  1960, 1978, 2002 You must see the original before the remakes...I love them all!
The term "time machine", was coined by Wells!

Doctor Who
This fantastic BBC Tv Show originally ran from 1963 to 1989, (1996 tv film), and relaunched in 2005 and still running!  The shows listed in Guinness World Records as the longest-running science fiction television show in the world!  I really can't express how in love I am with this show!  I love the characters, the music, the aliens, everything!  I want a tardis and a sonic screw driver!  Also a great family show!  The kids are addicted to it as much as me!

Planet of the Apes (1968)
I remember staying up all night to watch marathons of this movie on Citytv!  I think this was my first time travel movie I saw!  The one that made me fall in love with time travel!  I didn't really care for the remake...but the original films are awesome!  perfect for an all night movie marathon....hmmm  I just might have to have a party soon!
Planet of the Apes was followed by four sequels:
Based on the novel La planète des singes by Pierre Boulle, which was published in 1963.

Back to the Future (1985)
This is one of my absolute fave movies!  Yes of all time!  I even had it playing on Christmas morning(I have pics to prove).  My kids love this movie too.  If you need a great family movie for movie night pull this one out for the fam!

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
I remember watching this film when it first came out.  I loved it!  It was silly and fun to watch.  Very recently I notice this movie at our local library and borrowed it for my kids to see.  They think it is great!  And have borrowed it many times since to see again!  Now to find them the sequel Bill and Ted's Bogus Adventure!

Quantum Leap (1989-1993)
A time traveling tv show I remember watching with my family.  i always looked forward to watching this show every week!  I need to find find some dvd seasons for the kids to see!
Opening narration - The series' original opening narration was read by Scott Bakula:

"It all started when a time travel experiment I was conducting went..."a little caca". In the blink of a cosmic clock, I went from quantum physicist to Air Force test-pilot. Which could have been fun...if I knew how to fly. Fortunately, I had help – an observer from the project named Al. Unfortunately, Al's a hologram, so all he can lend is moral support. Anyway, here I am, bouncing around in time, putting things right that once went wrong, a sort of time traveling Lone Ranger, with Al as my Tonto. And I don't even need a mask... ("Oh Boy")"

12 Monkeys (1995)
inspired by Chris Marker's 1962 short film La jetée, and starring Bruce WillisMadeleine Stowe,Brad Pitt, and Christopher Plummer.  It has been awhile since I have seen this film.  But I remember how I loved how the story weaved all the plots together.

Crime Traveller  (1997)
I just found this tv series at my library.  It is a fun tv program about solving crime through time travel.

The rules of time travel in the series are as follows:
  1. You must not meet yourself in the past. It is not clear what would result if you did, but it is presumed the consequences would be dire.
  2. You cannot change the past. One of the results of this restriction is that the effects of the time traveller's journey back in time are already visible "before" the journey is made.
  3. You cannot exist more than twice in the same time frame. If you try to go back a second time, the machine will simply fail to operate.
  4. When "in the past", you must get back to the time machine by the time you "left". Otherwise, you will be trapped in a "loop of infinity". This is what happened to Holly Turner's father. (This apparently conflicts with rule 3, as the time traveller would have to be at the machine at this moment, otherwise they couldn't have used it to travel into the past).
  5. The time machine never travels into the future. Holly tells Jeff in the first episode "You can't travel into something that doesn't exist."

Thrift Share Monday! - 1980 Doll House

Today while I was thrifting I came across a bag full of, what looked like doll house parts.  Very messy thrown in...the bag was not big enough to hold all the pieces so it was taped to the larger piece to seal the bag shut.  For $1 I thought the risk was worth it, not knowing what I would find in the mess.

Boy was I shocked when I finally pieced it all together to look like this!  It is a complete doll house!  With all the people and furniture...in fantastic condition!  All for $1!!!!

Look at how beautiful it is!

Found this picture of the original box on the internet.  Made in Hong Kong Blue Box 1980 is written on the bottom of the house.  I think the box says Carly Home Doll House with Furniture 32 pieces.
http://rebeccascollections.blogspot.com/2009/04/blue-box-1980-dolls-house.html

I love this house!  I always wanted a doll house when I was a little girl!  This is my first!  I told the kids hands off it is mine!  :)

Lets take a look inside!  This is the layout featured on the box.  I like how they have the tv at the dinner table.
The Dining/Living room
I would love to have this room as my bedroom!
Master Bedroom
But I like to change it up!  That is what having a doll house is all about!

I like the living room on the upper floor.
Jane playing piano.  Dick watching tv.
The bedroom at the side...The kids don't get a room in this house.
Mother still putting on her face.
The entry hall is now more useful!
Father has an office now!
Bathroom.
I love my new find!

Good Night!

Party Time!!!

Woo Hoo!  It is that time again!  Party Time!

Horse Cake/Ice Cream Cake!

When you have a last minute party and have to use what you have on hand this is what comes up!

My daughter Kaitie was really disappointed that her good friend was not having a birthday party this year with friends.  So she decided to have a surprise party for her at our house.  With less then a 1 day notice we had to make a cake!

So I let Kaitie and another one of her other good friends have the kitchen last night.  They were armed with a simple white cake recipe and I let them go to it.   This is what they made...they added chocolate chips to it as well :)

It seems they decided to disregard the cake directions of using a 9x9 pan.  Oh well, I had a plan!

We still had extra ice cream from the Owl cake I made 2 weeks ago.  So I softened it, and spread it across the cake trying to even things up a bit.  Put in the freezer to "set".

The Birthday girl loves horses...So to decorate I went online to find a horse silhouette.  Printed out the simplest one I could find...and made it into a stencil.  I was going to use chocolate shavings(aka chocolate sawdust) but I happened to have this orange sparkly sugar sprinkles stuff.

Turned out not bad eh!  The kids absolutely loved it.

I LOVE Birthdays!
